Roses are more fun when they’re not possessed
Posted by tmz_99 on November 19th, 2005 filed in ReviewsFeeling at 90% today, just a little scratch on the throat, a little cough, but certainly nothing like the middle of the night wakeups I’ve been recieving in the last few days.
I had a dream last night, it involved me going to Thailand on a school excursion of all things, for 4 days i went on school trips which involved some ghostly goings on, a mured mystery and something else, the other 2 nights I spent going to a Black Eyed Peas concert and roming around with a blonde haired asian girl. I wish I remembered more, for this was truly an epic dream. I’ll try to train myself torwards trying to retain dreams once more. 🙂
The Exorcism of Emily Rose:
I came into this movie with mixed expectaitons as with most movies which are widely reviewed I thought that maybe too much had been given away by other reviewers. Once again it would be wasted by me if I said that The Exorcism of Emily Rose (TEOER) “was a courtroom drama about demonic possession with hints from the Exorcist” because we all know that before the title even comes on the screen. The hype about the movie had diminished my willingness to watch it and also made me negatively geared toward a movie that I seemingly know all about.
This would be the point in the review where I would say that the above quoted statement is all worng. however, it’s completely correct. What is fascinating about this movie is threefold.
Firstly, the acting is all very solid, the actors, especially the one portraying Emily herself draw us into the ugly world of exorcism without the shock value of the Exorcist. In fact, although the two movies share the same subject matter, they approach it from two very different angles.
Secondly the movie is more about the question of faith and where faith finds it’s place in modern society, in the movie, part of the reason the first exorcism goes wrong is that Emily was on perscription medicine.
Thirdly, damn, I fogot this one.. give me a minute.. 😛 Thirdly… the dwarf.. no, hang on, that’s my dreams again…
Thirdly is the juxtoposition between the two paces of the movie, the visually stunning and highly paced possession interludes with the less visually striking but more throught provoking courtroom scenes. The very presentation of this movie is to stimulate more thought, which based on a true story which in itself was ment to inspire thought; I think ironically that this movie gets done what it set out to do and tells Emily’s story in the best way it can.
A solid performance and eerily based on a true story, 7/10
