Join the masses…
Posted by tmz_99 on July 3rd, 2005 filed in UncategorizedSo yesterday I decided to join the masses and seeing as it was my gym-free (movie) day I watched the Revenge of the Sith.
The special effects were cool, and the movie tied in well between episodes 2 and 4. What I liked a lof about it was that the actual ‘feel’ of the movie was a lot more like epsiodes 4-6, it was darker and even the cinemography was more familiar of the earlier movies.
What was interesting was the concept of good, which had then become evil, not just through Anakin but the republic itself, things in the story had turned inside out on themselves. Anakin at one point remarks that to him the Jedi are now evil, and he is fighting on the side of good.
This brings me to an age old question, what is good, what is evil? Are they polar opposites and one can not exist without the other (a ‘no’ is pointless if one can’t say ‘yes’), or is evil simply the absence of good (such as cold is the absence of heat, darkness being the absence of light)?
I would personally say that they are opposites, the absence of good or evil brings neutrality wheres to be evil, something has to be ‘actively’ evil as good also has to be ‘active’. I’d be interested in any thoughts on the subject.. 🙂
Are good and evil even absolutes? I think they are certainly relative terms, good for one can be percieved as evil for another.

Hmmm…
I would agree if you say good and “bad” are relative terms: good for one can be percieved as bad for another. Let me take this as an analogy (I’m not really sure if I’d convince you with this one): An antidote for a particular lethal virus. As an infected individual for instance, your body will have to be injected by a lethal poison more lethal than the virus that infected you. It will have a lot of severe side effects but nevertheless it will generally save your life. I know you could cite some other better analogies but I hope my argument came on clear to you.
But to say that good and evil are relative terms… I don’t think so. I believe that they are actually absolutes. Absolute good is morality. We all know it. We don’t have to be taught of it. We don’t even have to ask about it to discern it. It was God who gave us a knowledge of absolute goodness. Originally, We were actually created good because man was created in the image and likeness of God and we know that God is the source of absolute goodness. But sadly, sin entered the world through the disobedience of our first parents (Adam and Eve) and the sin which was in them was passed on to all generations starting with their offsprings. Man now is no longer absolutely good (which once originally was) but is marred by sin. With the entrance of sin comes the entrance of evil. We know absolute evil because we are capable of producing it.
But yeah, there still are gray areas between good and evil: those acts which can’t be considered good nor evil.
So you see, we have a natural awareness of those good things we must do and those evil things we must shun. This awareness is inborn.
I haven’t seen “Revenge of the Sith” yet. To tell you the truth although Star Wars is a classic, I haven’t seen a single Star Wars episode yet… I don’t even know what it is all about (I live up the mountains you know. Joke!). Nah! I am not really a star wars fan. So maybe by answering your question, I just got you more confused… or maybe I am just missing the whole point of your query… is your question really related to the Star Wars plot? Is my answer of any help or did I confused you even more?
I hope you don’t mind my lengthy comment. I’ll wait for your response here or you can post it on my space.
Have a nice day Tom!

Good and evil.. good or evil.. who is to say one from the other really. It is a matter or perspective and that is alwyas tainted by the viewer… i saw this awesome excercise done once and ther were two pple who could only see one side of the same object,… except one side had a handle.. .. they argued and argued.. and in the end neither was wrong.. they just had different views… both valid…. but only from where the viewer is… i think we use good and evil to justify something.. to make ourselves feel better….. I really saw this in the movie…. the different view points and the different reasoning…
Anyway…. i think Lukians question is a lot more interesting… Can you taste purple… now that is something to think about..
Speak with you soon…
